"There is a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line." -Oscar Levant
Welcome to crazy/smart, a blog about what it's like to be twice exceptional (2e).
"Wait," you say, "what is 2e?" (Or maybe you don't say that, in which case you are definitely in the right place.)
Put simply, you're 2e if you're both intellectually gifted and have a learning disability or other brain-based disorder. "Gifted" can be defined a lot of ways, but if you're going for the I.Q. cutoff, it's usually around 130-140. As for the disorders, they are varied: Aspergers. ADHD. Dyslexia. (Yes, geniuses can be dyslexic. It's even possible to be a genius and illiterate.)
As for me, I've got a 173 I.Q, which just means I'm really, really good at puzzles and taking tests. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD after 32 years of what I always thought was a demented form of self-sabotage based in an unconscious fear of reaching my terrifying potential ... but turned out to just be bad brain wiring. Less dramatic, I suppose, but far easier to fix. I take Vyvanse every morning and I can't tell you how nice it is to be out of the mental Soviet Russia, where thoughts control you.
I'm also parent to a 2e son with Aspergers Syndrome.
Why should you read this blog? Well, statistically speaking, I'm probably smarter than you are, so maybe you'll learn something. (That was a joke, by the way. An absurdly high I.Q. is not the same thing as wisdom.) I can also be funny and entertaining, and I'm here to share the good, bad and the absurd about 2e life in the modern world. I'll pass along stories both poignant and humorous, useful tips and tricks, product and program reviews, guest posts by experts in the field, book recommendations, sanity checks and maybe even free stuff. We'll see how it goes.
